I have to do an essay about vegetarians can you help me?

What is a vegetarian?
Are there different types of vegetarian?
Who was the first vegetarian?

Thanks! =D

A vegetarian is someone who does not eat animal flesh, also known as meat. That includes fish.

There are, indeed, different kinds of vegetarians. Usually, when you say "vegetarian" you mean an ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Ovo means egg, lacto means milk. That means the person will eat eggs and milk, but no meat.

Even if something contains tiny amounts of animals, like chicken stock to make soup with, pie crust made with lard (which is rendered pig fat), or stuffing flavored with chicken, a vegetarian won’t eat it. This leads to some very careful label-reading.

Most vegetarians also refuse to eat gelatin, since it is made from parts of animals, so that means that marshmallows and certain capsules that drugs come in are also not vegetarian.

Some people call themselves pesco-vegetarians, and eat fish, but most other vegetarians think pesco-vegetarians shouldn’t be called vegetarians at all, since a fish is an animal.

A stricter version of vegetarianism is veganism. A vegan (that’s pronounced "VEE-gun.") won’t eat anything that comes from an animal. So no meat, including fish, no dairy and no eggs. Some vegans also turn down honey, out of solidarity with bees.

People become vegetarian for many reasons. Some just don’t want to kill animals. Some want to reduce their impact on the environment. Some have religious reasons. And others think that eating a vegetarian diet is healthier.

I have no idea who the first vegetarian was. That’s like asking who first ate wheat. That answer is lost to history!

substitutes and nutrition for vegetarians?

so, im a vegetarian.. and i need some advice =]
there is this dish i used to LOVE [tuna, corn, mayo, pickles, and hot cheetos in a sandwich] and i want to know if any fellow vegetarians know of a tuna substitute for this recipe?
also, substitutes for any kind of meat that i can get at walmart or kroger? this way i dont have to cook separate meals for my boyfriend and i.
and one last thing- maybe a nutrition chart? like a food pyramid for vegetarians =D i want to make sure im not missing out on any important part of a healthy diet. THX =]
sea food is NOT vegetarian. vegetarians do not eat the flesh of ANY animal.. people that eat no meat exept for sea food are pescatarians.

Have you tried the Morningstar or Bocha chicken strips? They are fantastic and you can use them just like you would a chicken strip, in a sandwich or salad, and I bet if you chopped them up you could use them in the tuna recipe you are talking about. Yum.

making vegetarian lasagna?

Im trying to make lasagna for the first time and i’d like to know if i should cover the lasagna to bake or leave it uncovered. whats the difference? will it cook better covered? does it cook better in microwave/oven? how do i know if its cooked? wont it spill over? i will be using a 13×9 baking pan. how thick should the lasagna be? thanks
thank u all..

Covered. But, if you use foil to cover it with… make very certain that the foil does not touch the food, as the tomato sauce will literally dissolve the foil onto the top.

Make it as thick as you can… just below the top of the pan. It won’t bubble up, unless you put too much sauce.

Never use the microwave… oven — always. Microwaves suck for cooking.

You will know when it’s cooked, because you will put the noodles in uncooked, and when the noodles are cooked, your lasagna is done. Remember, you will have to allow it to cool for a long time before it hardens enough to be able to cut and serve. You can add Yves ground-round, that stuff is great in lasagna.

age and becoming a vegetarian ?

ohkay well i am 13 years old and ive been needing to change my life. ive wanted to be a vegetarian since a very young age but my mum forced me to eat meat. i have to admit it does sound good at times but i am honestly not into eating it or the thought of eating an animal. it breaks my heart. my parents said i am to young and that it could be bad for me but i wanted to kno, is that true?
and does it really cost alot to change like that?
i just dont like the thought of slaughtering a f*cking animal -_- help?!
i dont wanna become a vegan lol. just a vegetarian.
[:
they also say i will have iron and protein problems? wat can help me wiff dat??

I can tell you now this is going to be a long answer. These questions really make me mad. No, no you wanting to be vegetarian, but parents forcing their kids to eat meat when they don’t want to. I went vegetarian at 12, and let me say my parents tried to guide me into eating meat again, but I told them flat out that this is who I am and it’s not going to change because they don’t like it. Sometimes they still get angry with me and try to make me feel bad about myself, but I don’t let it get to me.
I have a friend who has been wanting to be a vegetarian for some time now. She’s told her parents, and they say no and that she needs to eat her meat. And she’s 15! Sometimes you just need to stand up for what YOU believe in, even if it means saying no to your parents.
No, going vegetarian at 13 will not hurt you. In fact it can really improve your health if you do it the RIGHT way. Don’t run straight to carbs. Replace your meats with vegetables and beans. When I gave up meat I replaced it was bread, milk, ect. and it actually caused me to gain weight. Now I make an effort to eat at least 2-3 vegetables a day and drink soy milk or water. Since i plan to go vegan when I move out I sometimes go a few days without dairy or eggs just to get used to it. I rarely ever eat eggs since I don’t find them very appealing.
Anyway, no, it doesn’t cost a lot. Vegetables are cheaper than meat. If you replace your meat with Morning star products (fake meat, highly recommended, I love them:)), then your protein problems are solved. I honestly went 2 years without thinking about iron, and when I went to the doctor to get tested for anemia (low on iron) I came out totally fine. Iron is pretty easy to keep up with.

But I strongly suggest doing some more research. Decide the type of vegetarian you want to be. The most popular is Lacto-ovo vegetarian, which doesn’t eat any meat but does eat dairy and eggs. I’m sure if you educate yourself on the topic more then your parents will have an easier time getting over the fact that you’ve made this decision. Good luck and I really hope you make the decision based on what YOU want:)

What’s Wrong with the Vegetarian Lifestyle?

We should live in such a way as to cause the least amount of pain and suffering to living beings according to human conduct of Ahimsa. Therefore, we first refrain for killing animals for food, because of their sensitivity to pain and suffering. The same is true for plants, only to a lesser degree. Therefore, humanity will move in the directions of reducing the pain and suffering caused to plants. For example, the torture of house plants and vegetarianism aimed at the least hurtful forms of diet. Neohumanism.
