Doctors Explain Healthy Way for Bill Clinton’s Dramatic Weight Loss

After undergoing heart surgery back in February, former President Bill Clinton has adopted a healthier lifestyle. In a recent interview with CNN Bill Clinton talked about his plant-based, vegan diet and recent weight loss.
“I live of off beans, legumes, vegetables and fruits. It has completely changed my metabolism. I’ve lost 24 lbs and I weigh about what I did in high school,” says Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton says his diet does not include any meat or dairy. Clinton drinks a glass of almond milk mixed with fruit and a protein powder supplement every morning.
What made him go vegan? Clinton has read many books on the topic, including books by T. Colin Campbell, Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. Dean Ornish.
///

A Short Historical Perspective on Vegetarian Diets

In the past, many viewed vegetarianism as strange and faddish but appropriately planned vegetarian diets are now recognized by many, including the American Dietetic Association, as being nutritionally adequate, and providing healthful benefits in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases .

Choosing a nonvegetarian lifestyle has a significant health and medical cost. The total direct medical costs in the United States attributable to meat consumption were estimated to be $60-80 billion a year, based upon the higher prevalence of hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, gallstones, obesity and food-borne illness among omnivores compared with vegetarians .

A large body of scientific literature suggests that the consumption of a diet of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, nuts, and fruits, with the avoidance of meat and high-fat animal products, along with a regular exercise program is consistently associated with lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, less obesity and consequently less heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and mortality . In African-Americans, the frequent consumption of nuts, fruits and green salads was associated with 35-44 percent lower risk of overall mortality.

Distinguishing Feature

A vegetarian diet is distinguished from an omnivorous diet by its content of dry beans and lentils. These take the place of meat and fish as the major source of protein. And there are so many different kinds of beans you can choose from – kidney, lima, pinto, cranberry, navy, Great Northern, garbanzo, soy beans, and black-eyed peas.

Soy protein contains isoflavones, such as genistein and daidzein, that act as phytoestrogens and inhibit tumor growth, lower blood cholesterol levels, decrease the risk of blood clots, and diminish bone loss. These benefits clearly translate into a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and osteoporosis.

Cancer Protection

A major report published by the World Cancer Research Fund in 1997 recommended we lower our risk of cancer by choosing predominantly plant-based diets rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, legumes and minimally processed starchy staple foods, and to limit the intake of grilled, cured and smoked meats and fish. These methods of preparing meat produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines which are carcinogenic .

About three dozen plant foods have been identified as possessing cancer-protective properties. These include cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower), umbelliferous vegetables and herbs (carrots, celery, cilantro, caraway, dill, parsley), other fruits and vegetables (citrus, tomatoes, cucumber, grapes, cantaloupe, berries), beans (soybeans), whole grains (brown rice, oats, whole wheat), flaxseed, many nuts, and various seasoning herbs (garlic, scallions, onions, chives, ginger, turmeric, rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, and basil.

Heart Disease

Lifelong vegetarians had a 24 percent lower incidence and lifelong vegans (those who eat no eggs or dairy products) had a 57 percent lower incidence of coronary heart disease compared to meat eaters. Healthy volunteers who consumed a vegetarian diet that was rich in green, leafy vegetables and other low-calorie vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, celery, green beans, etc.), fruits, nuts, sweet corn and peas experienced after two weeks decreases of 25, 33, 20 and 21 percent in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and total/HDL cholesterol ratio, respectively .

Various factors exist in fruits and vegetables that provide possible protection against cardiovascular disease. These factors include folic acid, dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, carotenoids, phytosterols, flavonoids, and other polyphenolic antioxidants.

Stroke and Diabetes

Data from many studies supports a protective relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and risk of ischemic stroke . Cruciferous and green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits were the most protective.

Romaine-Celery-Cucumber-Pear-Orange
Living Green Salad Recipe with a
Delicious Orange Citrus-Avocado-Fennel
Low Calorie Salad Dressing Recipe

* I n g r e d i e n t s *
For the DRESSING:
— 2 Oranges
— 1 bunch of Fennel leaves
— 1 Avocado, roughly chopped

For the SALAD:
— 1 head of Romaine Lettuce
— 1 head of Celery
— 2 Pears
— 1 Cucumber*
— 2-4 Oranges (enough to make about 2 cups worth of orange segments)
*unpeeled if organic, peeled if inorganic

* P r e p a r a t i o n *
— 1) For the dressing, use a manual citrus juicer or a citrus hand juicer to squeeze the juice of 2 oranges into your Vita-Mix blender, or other high-powered blender of your choice. http://bit.ly/GZsuq or http://bit.ly/3OTXD9

— 2) By hand, break the fennel leaves into smaller pieces & toss them along with the roughly chopped avocado into your Vitamix blender as well.

— 3) Blend until desired consistency is reached.

— 4) For the salad, chop the romaine lettuce leaves, celery stalks, pears, orange segments & cucumber all into bite-sized pieces with a chef’s knife & toss together in a large serving bowl.

— 5) Drizzle dressing over salad or offer it on the side…enjoy!

* I n s p i r a t i o n *
— When hot, dehydrated & hungry, it feels good to make a recipe that’s full of greens, yet also delicious, satisfying & thirst-quenching! Isn’t this salad gorgeous? So light, tasty & refreshing… beautiful too! I’ve found that cutting the excess fat out of our diets helps with weight loss & regeneration, as well as for increased mental clarity & higher levels of energy.

— I might be looking on the skinny side lately, but lately I’ve been eating very low-fat as part of my own personal summer detox program. I do plan on doing some deeper healing & total regeneration, so do not be alarmed if/when I temporarily get skinnier. Krista can vouch for the fact that because of all the years I spent bodybuilding, the ‘good’ part that came from all that abuse I did to my body in the gym is that today my muscles are very quick to respond to any weight training I do. So when I re-enter a building phase again this fall and winter, you’ll literally see me gain 5 pounds of quality tissue and/or muscle in a week. Krista says that on a day-to-day basis she can literally see if I’ve gained or lost a pound, and from where (I suppose it doesn’t hurt that she sees me naked all the time because of where we live http://bit.ly/2TGi1V)

— My search for true radiant health has lead me to a low fat raw vegan diet; that’s just how it turned out. I focus on getting my energy from fruit & eating a lot of salads and greens, along with getting even more greens from juices & smoothies. But the key is that I don’t heat or cook anything I eat. I also eat a lot of high-water fruits & vegetables. I don’t eat any dehydrated foods at this time & the densest foods I currently eat are only avocados & thai young coconuts.

— Remember to take care of yourself! Focus on eating & drinking lots of low-fat, high-water fruits & vegetables! If you’re a beginner, do not stress out! Just continually get more of the junk out of your diet & steadily replace it with more good stuff, as you are worth it! And keep on coming back to this channel for some deeper and deeper healing!

— I love fruits and vegetables…so I feel more like a fruit and vegetable teacher, than a raw food teacher! :D

— The Truth is in between the words. On your spiritual journey, you will soon wake up to realize that you do not know ANYTHING. Or, you may already be aware of this right now. :D

— Fruits, vegetables and herbs are for so many different types of people: they are for athletes, they are for people who want to lose weight, they are for people who like to meditate, they are for those who need to heal up chronic and degenerative diseases… basically, they are for everyone!

— The *life force* inside of you is what shines, and is what is most attractive in others. Fruits and vegetables simply allow you to exude this life force energy more easily and freely than dead, cooked and/or processed foods. You literally are what you eat!

— Do the work now! Plant the seeds, read the spiritual books, apply the teachings of the nutrition, practice meditation, kindness, forgiveness & patience… and most importantly, practice stopping the ego from reacting and wasting your precious energy! If you are unable to stop the ego, at the very least just observe it doing what it does with awareness…but do not judge! Just be aware. Awareness is always the first step… :D

❤ Cauliflower ‘n’ Corn-Stuffed
Collard Green Veggie Wraps +
a YUMMY Peach-Tomato-Avocado-Lime Dip! ❤

This ended up being one of the best recipes
I have ever made on YouTube!!!
The dipping sauce turned out so incredibly good,
that it literally gave me goosebumps.
This sauce has perfect textures,
a perfect taste & a perfect balance.

* I n g r e d i e n t s *
For the FILLING:
— 1 head of Cauliflower, broken into florets
— 4 cobs of Corn, raw

For the DIPPING SAUCE (can also function as a salad dressing recipe!):
— 1-2 Beefsteak Tomatoes
— 1 Avocado
— 1 Peach
— 1 Lime

For the VEGGIE WRAPS:
— 1 bunch of Collard Green leaves (or another dark, leafy green such as Kale)
— Carrots*, Celery Stalks, etc. (if you desire extra veggies for dipping)
*unpeeled if organic; peeled if inorganic

* P r e p a r a t i o n *
— 1) To make the filling, use your food processor’s S-blade attachment to blend the cauliflower florets down to about the consistency of mashed potatoes, then transfer to a bowl.

— 2) Slice the raw corn off of the cobs, and roughly fold into the cauliflower using a mixing spoon.

— 3) To make the dipping sauce, roughly chop the tomatoes, avocado & peach, and toss them into your Vita-Mix blender, or other high-powered blender of your choice. http://bit.ly/GZsuq or http://bit.ly/3OTXD9

— 4) Use a manual citrus juicer or a citrus hand juicer to squeeze the juice of the lime into the Vitamix as well.

— 5) Blend until the consistency of a thick vegetable dip is reached, and transfer to a bowl.

— 6) Scoop the cauliflower ‘n’ corn filling into the center of the collard green leaves, roll them up into wraps, and serve alongside the YUMMY dipping sauce!

— 7) If you want to include whole vegetables to also enjoy with the dip, then please do so! You could try carrots, celery, etc.

* I n s p i r a t i o n *
— Most of the recipes that I prepare every day, I have usually not prepared before! I pretty much just look at what food I have in the fridge and coolers, taking care to notice what items might be soon going bad if they aren’t eaten soon, and then go from there.

— Likewise, when I go grocery shopping I don’t usually have a ‘list’ of items to get unless there is some special occasion or special ingredient that I just have to have. I instead prefer to pick out what fruits and vegetables seem to be the freshest, most vibrant, as well as most local and organic or pesticide-free as possible. I encourage you to try out these methods of shopping and preparing food as well!

— As you’ve probably noticed, all of my recipes can be made in around 10-30 minutes. For my day-to-day eating, I like to keep things simple! I don’t understand a lot of the raw food books, as they seem to make things so complicated! I just want some grub, and I know you and possibly your families do too. ;)

— Also, I like to eat ‘clean’ recipes with little or no salt, with not too many crazy ingredients, and with simply not a great number of ingredients at all. The more simple your eating, the more simple and easy your digestion will be, leaving YOU with extra energy. Not a bad deal. ;)

— On your “raw food diet” or “fruit and vegetable” path of eating, support is the key…along with simplicity and non-judgment.

— I am glad that you are getting healthier! I am glad that I can be of service to you! I’ve never had more fun, nor have I ever felt more passionate about anything in my life than what I’m doing right now by making these videos for you.

— I’ve also never had so much love thrown back at me like this either. I feel this amazing feeling of love, and each and every one of you out there is a blessing in my life.

— We are going to all get more healthy together, and I have a feeling that we’re all just getting started with this. I pledge to you that I’m not going to lose the Dan. I will quit before I lose the love. I’m staying real.

— Please enjoy this recipe, enjoy this community, enjoy this support, and take good care of yourself!

***BONUS RECIPE***
❤ Raw Mashed ‘Potatoes’ ❤
— Using your food processor’s S-blade attachment, blend cauliflower florets in your food processor along with some olive oil, sea salt & brewer’s yeast to taste, until the consistency of mashed potatoes is reached.
— SECRET: This recipe is the trick to getting your kids to regularly consume cauliflower, which is a highly beneficial cruciferous vegetable!
